I asked Steve to pen down his personal thoughts and feelings regarding David Bowie.
He wrote a beautiful homage for you to read:
Bowie
I never properly met Bowie.
Not properly.
I shared the same room space as him once or twice, albeit with numerous other musicians.
And I’ve shared the stage with him, again with numerous other musicians and even then I had to share it with millions of other people from all over the world via satellite.
That particular event being Live Aid at Wembley Stadium.
But I never got to have a one on one conversation with him.
We never had our moment together. Maybe I was too starstruck to strike up a conversation.
Shame, considering that he was an approachable, down to earth kind of guy, especially to his fans. Fans like me.
I did, however believe that our paths would cross again at some point.
And properly.
I thought that I had it all worked out.
He was going to call me up and ask me to play sax on some song of his.
Perhaps in acknowledgement of my efforts in helping bring about ‘Holy Holy’, a supergroup featuring Spider From Mars’ drummer Woody Woodmansey and also Bowie’s long time producer, bass player and friend, Tony Visconti.
That band was a wonderful labour of love to me. I got to perform songs that I grew up listening to alongside some of the musicians that were on the record. And I got to play Bowie’s 12 string guitar parts as well as sax. I was a kid in a toy shop.
It wasn’t Bowie but he knew about the project and he gave it his blessing by allowing us to promote our activities through his official social media sites.
I was getting closer.
And then the unthinkable happens.
Although we never did meet properly he knew of my existence and he knew what I did and how I sounded. That is some comfort to me.
Through his music and his art I got to know him fairly well. After all I grew up with him. We all did.
And importantly, through his music and his art I got to know a lot about myself.
No other artist has come close in influencing me and the paths that I would choose to follow in my life. I believe that I speak on behalf of a generation. My generation.
And let’s not forget that without Bowie there would be no Spandau.
And that’s proper.
David Bowie…Thank you. Thank you. Thank you
