Dying like heroes not dropping like flies…to quote Visconti

Posted on Posted in NEWS

Musicians, actors, artists are passing over to the other side at a ridiculous rate right now. Yesterday we lost Glen Frey of The Eagles, another band I was into back in the 70s when they were kings of soft rock and sweet vocal harmonies. We also lost Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin, Mott The Hoople’s drummer. Yet another band that made an impression on me. In fact, Bowie wrote their biggest hit ‘All The Young Dudes’ for them. One of my fave ever tunes.

Of course, people die all the time so why should we pay more attention when someone famous dies. Well, perhaps it’s because they became famous because they were extraordinary, i.e. they were not  average Joes. And they left their mark on us because their talent made us sit up and listen. So we’re gonna take notice when they sign off.

A pal of mine said on Facebook that God must be forming a Supergroup. I only hope that he’s not looking for a sax player.

Steve x

When an artist, esp. a musician, passes away, it's as if a relative or a friend had died. Because they're always at home as a part of it although they don't know it (even if they /you think you do, you actually don't ). They express exactly what you feel with their music and a strange but amazing link is created (a one way link, but a link in any case), they're that mate who really can understand you. Their music is what our souls are made of, our dreams fly with their music, our sorrows travel far from you in those notes... Then you become big, powerful and experience an amazing feeling of excitement only compared to... love. It's not that a musician is more or less worthy to be mourned than anonymous people, it's just that they are ours, and their music is ours, not theirs anymore. They're in our souls and when they leave, our hearts crack. And I can really tell you that you'll never get to understand this because you're not a SB fan, you're "just" one of them. And I really wish you could experience what I have over these past 32 years of relationship with your Music. But you'll never know... Besos de una viguesa en Madrid!

It's a great line about a God forming a super group Steve. 2016 has certainly started off a little rough, but worldwide, people have united in their memories, love and grief of the greatness that has left us, (too soon). Music leaves an indelible mark on our hearts..... It reminds me of the Queen song, "who wants to live forever", gives me goosebumps thinking about the beautiful Freddie Mercury. Can't imagine those harmonies in God's super group Much love, Tania x

When will you do a cover of Soul Love with Tony? Be nice! My favourite, along with Golden Years but have just discovered the 'When I Live My Dream' off the 'David Bowie' LP. Nice words by the way!

Steve, your saxaphone playing is already heavenly..... let's hear it for a lot longer please, besides the other lady is right: Miles Davis is up there before you (and so too are more jazz playing greats!) so no worries, love!

Steve I like that you 've remembered these artists they were unique people. They have dedicated their life to music . An ancient King said many years ago : Have you beheld a man skillfull in his work? Before kings is where he will station himself. ......... It right that they are remembered for their good things they have done to all. I believe that God wants you still continue to play sax here on earth not up in the sky !!

I share the message , however , it is important to remember that it is missing , because that will live forever through our memories , for the saxophonist is too soon ....

They were all exceptional souls who made an impact in our lives in their own unique way. I couldn't be happier being born when I was and being around to experience people like Bowie in his hayday up until he passed. I really like what you've said on here Steve, and I know the big man upstairs will let you stay in the Supergroup you're already in... !! I was sad to hear of Dale passing too...happy memories of Mott The Hoople songs from High School days. Didn't David Bowie write All The Young Dudes? Great song....you've got good taste in music! ;-) x

Cuando muere un famoso todo el mundo lamenta su perdida, pero .....cuantas criaturas mueren y nadie le echa cuentas???

We cry them because we know them. Some of them are part of our lives. Many of them are leaving too soon to be expected to leave so it adds more pain to our grief. And not all the music needs a sax arrangement. Luckily.

This was so lovely to read. I think he'd have loved looking down on the unofficial street party that formed that night in Brixton. I too am a fan of a fabulous musician and humble person who I dream of meeting one day. I'd like to think I would have a lively and entertaining conversation with him but I'd probably just turn to jelly and get the giggles. I dream that one day I'll get to spend some time in your company, just like the fan you met at the Kim Wilde gig. Until then I'd love a happy birthday tweet on my birthday, 2nd Feb. Pretty please xx

ahahahahah Steve you've made me laugh even if you talks serious !!! Anyway....there is Miles Davis in God's team....dont worry you can stay again !!! Xxx

I guess one the reasons why we talked about their death is because at some point they touched our lives through their music. And when they do, it seems like we built some sort of connection and we feel the loss. Seems like God is forming a rock group for now so he won't be needing a sax player :)

So sad so many have passed recently and such talent we can only be glad that they have left us with a legacy ............. Inspiring the youth of today and hopefully the youth of the future ............

Hola Steve. Gracias por tus preciosas palabras. Descansen en paz. Ese grupo estará tocando en el cielo sin duda pero Dios quiere que nos regales a los que seguimos en la tierra tus preciosas melodías. Besitos para Sabrina y para ti.

Totally agree, I think you said it all when you wrote "they left their mark on us because their talent made us sit up and listen". About that Supergroup.... Naaaa, you're not good enough, you need to practise a little more here on earth xx
